Project idea: Swath

Technologies: Communication, Sensors & actuators, Software, web & networks

We are looking for the following organisations: SME, Large Enterprise, End user organisation

Action type: Research, Development, Testing / Trials, Business model(s), Service innovation, Social Science / Elderly

Applications: Information and learning, Mobility

SWATH proposes to create an application that would support designing a public transportation voyage on a PC and then transfer it to a smart phone where the smart phone app would tell you were and what bus/metro/train to get on and on the basis of GPS and dead-reckoning tell the time to get off, and will support multiple segmented trips. It will also support finding help with the smart phone if you were not in the place (according to the phones GPS) that you should be according to your itinerary. This application is not synched to the actual transport system’s system-state nor is it doing any kind of analysis besides ‘knowing’ that where you are is not what it predicted where you would be according to the itinerary. It is primarily a task of creating an end user programming tool and a smart-phone app that uses the created itinerary along with GPS and a clock to make primitive inferences about the state of the trip. It is expected that this could be turned into a product in 1-3 years after the project ends and does not particularly present any difficult research issues.
