Activity profile: Fraunhofer IIS - RF and Microwave Design Department

Founded in 1985, Fraunhofer IIS, located in Erlangen, Germany, ranks first among the Fraunhofer Institutes concerning headcount and revenues. With the development of the audio coding method MPEG2 Layer-3, short MP3, Fraunhofer IIS has reached a worldwide recognition.

Fraunhofer IIS is a worldwide technology leader in wireless communications systems and has the technical recourses from chip to system design, developing prototypes ready to go into commercial production.

Our group has a long experience in the research and design field of RFID systems. The projects deal with the reliable wireless communication link, wireless power transmission and inductive coupled sensor technology. Another research topic is the localisation of objects based on RFID tags. The development of technologies for RFID tags on or even in metal (tags in a die-casting process) is an ongoing research activity.

All the necessary measurement instruments and especially an antenna chamber which is unique in Europe are also available. Moreover the practical experience of Fraunhofer IIS in radio propagation measurement and analysis is significant: logistic applications, offices, AAL but also sport stadiums under different weather conditions.

Our competencies include the design of systems up to production level, the verification in field tests as well as the development of subsystems and modules. Fraunhofer IIS is working in national and international projects.

We are interested in collaborating in projects dealing with RFID, short-range communication, energy transmission, localization systems, etc.
