Hungarian Osteoporosis Patient Association (HOPA) is a non profit, non governmental umbrella organisation including groups operating at various places in the country: patient clubs, lifestyle clubs, associations, self support groups (26). Most of the clubs are led by civil voluntary hostesses with involvement of medical doctors-consultants. HOPA has no employees working based on an employment contract or another contract under the Civil Code.
Our vision is the world without osteoporotic fractures and improved quality of life of elderly people and our mission is to increase awareness and understanding of osteoporosis to promote prevention, diagnosis and treatment of the disease. The goals of association are to nurture and enlarge the network of support groups in the country and expand our partnership working on similar or complementary issues and projects.
HOPA has good practices in patient education, organisation of campaigns, health promotion events also in cooperation with international partners:
1998
HOPA was awarded with the EFFO European Educational Grant for Patient Societies: “Hungarian Osteoporosis Educational Project for civilian volunteers”.
1998-1999
Cooperation with Osteoporosis Society of Canada
May 18, 1999
Targeted Support Program of IOF - Conference of HOPA with participation of Osteoporosis Society of Canada in Budapest.
2004
With PHARE support (Access 2003 Programme-Networking Facility Scheme) HOPA organised a “It’s never too late” conference with Romanian end British contribution about patient education, health promotion, non pharmacological aspects of osteoporosis and holistic management of fragility fractures. Our main international partners in this project were EXTEND and ASPOR .
2009
HOPA was presented with the IOF-Amgen Health Professionals Awarness Grants valued at 10,000 USD for the production of a video clip featuring an entertaining role play where cases studies and questions raised by patients are put into the form of a dialogue and play.
HOPA is full member of International Osteoporosis Foundation and International Alliance of Patients' Organizations , associate member of European Patient's Forum as well.
