Activity

UMANA focuses its activity on products and innovative services on the biomechanics field; these products and services are developed on the basis of companyowned technologies. The design, simulation and development of custom software of R&D&I projects are on the base of UMANAʼs technologies. The company is specialized in the development of new technologies in the biomechanics and ergonomics areas, with an integrated perspective. The whole life productʼs cycle is covered: conception, design, definition of materials and manufacturing processes, analysis and simulation, prototype, experimental validation, standardization...

Products and Services

 
UMANA carries out Biomechanical Functional Evaluation Services, Design Projects, Analysis and Ergonomic Evaluation of Products, Processes and Production Plants, and Biomechanical Analysis Products for professional sport. The following lines of products / services stand out:
 
Clinical Biomechanics Services: UMANA works as health-care centre and it is the first Galician Biomechanical Analysis Laboratory. Inside the Laboratory, functional evaluation tests are carried out to provide clinical diagnosis of injuries and traumas, and to assess the rehabilitation process by means of the quantification of the rehabilitation level.
 
Professional sport technical and performance improvement products: UMANA works on the development and construction of Data Capture Systems (DCA) for biomechanical analysis of sport activities. These equipments are used for performance and technical optimization, measuring parameters as force, power, fatigue, coordination, performances... and they include analysis software, maintenance and repair service, etc. Some examples are:
  • Canoeing equipment.
  • Fixed seat rowboat (“traineras”) equipment and sliding seat rowboat (Olympic row) equipment.
  • Cycling equipment.
 
Ergo-design projects: ergonomic evaluation technology for industrial product design and optimization. These are especially suitable to the ergo-design in sectors as automotive, naval, railway and aeronautical industries; and to the development of health products. UMANA works on the ergonomics improvement from three approaches: comfort, health and safety. Some examples include the: design of bus seats, development of professional footwear, design of mattresses and sprung bed bases, design of wheelchairs, design of sports machines...
 
External R&D&I Projects: according to other companies or public organizations requirements, UMANA develops R&D&I projects in the biomechanics field (cutting edge technologies of biomechanical engineering) and in the ergonomics field (ergo-design, sitting and rest, universal accessibility...) representing the R&D&I department of the above mentioned organizations.

It calls on Mechanical Engineers specialized in Biomechanics, Ergonomics, Design and Computing, Telecommunications Engineers, Computing Engineers, Doctors, Bachelor in Business Administration.... The company closely collaborates with Architects, Physiotherapists and professional Physical Trainers. T
Technical and material resources
UMANA most relevant own technologies, born of R&D&I projects are:
  • Biomechanical Functional Evaluation Technology: this facilitates the evaluation of joint mobility, muscular activity, joint power and strength... by undertaking a dynamic diagnosis of the whole musculoskeletal system.
  • Biomechanical technologies for ergonomic evaluation of products and workplaces (own development), "UMANA_DESIGN" and "UMANA_PROCESS”, that facilitate the evaluation of the effects of the use of a product or a workplace in the short, medium and long term. The aim is to reduce risks, discomfort, injuries and / or sick leaves in professional activity, improving efficiency and physical performance. An example is the new brackets for ambulance stretchers that reduce the inertia in the displacements and optimize the safety of the injured person.

Completed projects and results
 
Physical ergonomics and adaptation of products and architectural and urban environments to disabled people. Work package in CAMI III EU funded project within the framework of the Cross-border Cooperation Programme “Interreg III".
 
Ergo-design of a new range of bus seats for international markets, adding ergonomic analysis of seats at anthropometric, positional, spinal, thermal and pressure allocation levels; ergo-design was systematically applied to successive prototypes, until reaching the final product. Funded by PROFIT, National scheme to support R&D projects.
 
 
Ergo-design project of a new range of professional health footwear for international markets, where UMANA developed the ergonomic evaluation tasks at muscular efficiency level, footstep allocation, thermal evacuation reaching new technical solutions. Funded by CDTI, National scheme to support industrial innovation projects.
 
Present developments
 
Development of a new rehabilitation technology for elite athletes (R&D&I Project co-financed by IGAPE and IN.CI.TE), adds a new service provided by the company, complementary to the design and development of sport technical and performance improvement products and the Biomechanical Functional Evaluation within the Clinical Biomechanics Services.
 
Development of a new technology for prevention of musculoskeletal injuries in the workplace. This technology can be adapted to different sector requirements for products and workplaces, by the development of specifically designed equipment, evaluating corporal damages and side-effects through a sensors system. Such a technology allows evaluation and prevention of injuries and / or sick leaves in the short, medium and long term.
